Sinister is a 2012 American supernatural horror film written, produced, edited and directed by Scott Derrickson. It stars Ethan Hawke and Juliet Rylance. A couple adopt a daughter who tells them that their home is not theirs and that she has to obey rules in order to save them from The Presence. What they don't know is that the daughter's disturbing visions are entirely real and rapidly escalating into deadly terror for all mankind. Sinister was released on August 30, 2012 in the United States by Columbia Pictures. Despite receiving generally positive reviews from critics it grossed $90 million worldwide against its $3 million budget making it a box office bomb. Two high school seniors move into what they think is their dream house. The home is located in a rural area, but then the mother of the teenage girl, Sara (Ethan Hawke), asks them to stay with her for the weekend. Sara has recently lost her husband to cancer and has moved back home to be close to her daughter Claire (Juliet Rylance), who is apparently much too young to understand what's going on between her and her "Teddy Bear". Sara shows them around the rented house, telling them of a former tenant who was murdered in their basement. In no time, Claire starts acting odd and frightens everyone with loud noises and visions of horrific, dark figures lurking around the property. Sara locks her in her room, but Claire refuses to stay there. Sara asks Hawke (who is dating her daughter's teacher) to help find some answers, but he is reluctant. Hawke and Rylance convince Sara that they are on to something and the two head off to the local police station, where they meet up with Officer Gaines (Clancy Brown). Gaines asks them if there is anything new about the house, but soon leaves when Sara asks him about the presence around the property. Suddenly, two people are killed on their way home after visiting Sara's house. Other neighbors start having similar experiences including a teenage boy who believes his dad died because of what is happening at Sara's house. Sara starts hearing strange noises inside of her house and Claire begins claiming to be possessed. Sara calls her friend who is an FBI agent named Hope (Lin Shaye) for some help, but Hope can't do much. The locals are starting to believe that Sara's house is haunted by the ghost of the former tenant, but Sara still refuses to believe them. She goes into town where she meets with a local warlock named Ulrich (James Ransone) who claims that her family has been cursed by The Presence for trespassing on sacred Native American burial grounds. Ulrich tells Sara that she needs to remove all of the symbols he draws on a piece of paper from the walls so The Presence will leave her house forever. A local news crew catches up with Sara and Claire, who is acting more and more psychotic, in the woods near the town library. Claire tells reporters that she is being attacked by a tall dark figure in the woods. The police find them and bring them back to Sara's house where Claire claims that she's been kidnapped by a tall man in a black coat. Now believing that there is a supernatural presence at her home, Sara calls Ulrich again to help her remove the symbols from the walls of her home. He can't do anything until his ritual has been completed. Meanwhile, Ulrich's ritual begins to affect Claire's behavior as she begins hearing voices and seeing demons at all times of day and night.
